Katelyn Spurgin is a multi-hyphenated artist with nearly fifteen years of experience working and playing in the theatre industry. In addition to performance, she has filled educational, technical, administrative, and managerial roles ranging from small schools to a multi-venue performing arts center. Her training background includes Shakespeare, Viewpoints, the Suzuki Method of Actor Training, directing, and early modern staging practices.
Katelyn teaches in the Theatre and English departments at Vanguard University and Concordia University. She is the founder of Shakespeare on Tour!, an educational touring company of Vanguard students. In its inaugural semester, the company toured to six schools in Orange County and performed for over 500 students. She is in her element working with undergraduates, particularly with the underclassmen, helping establish a firm foundation for their college work. She continues to work professionally in the area, and has performed all across Southern California.
She is rediscovering a love for writing, often reflecting on performances and writing about events surrounding Shakespeare or other theatre. She also combines her passion for Shakespeare with original work surrounding the bard’s smaller characters. Her current writing project is entitled “Shakespeare’s Shadows” and offers expansions on his smallest characters.
She received her MFA in Shakespeare and Performance from Mary Baldwin University with a focus in directing. Her research explored directing inclusive, engaging Shakespeare for young audiences. As a member of Treehouse Shakespeare Ensemble, the MFA company based with MBU, she served as a production manager and a member of the education committee.
She earned her Master of Letters degree from Mary Baldwin University in 2022. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Vanguard University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts in 2011. She also studied at Magdalen College, Oxford with the British American Drama Academy, and studied Shakespeare and drama at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
